Great 30 years of Zlatan otok winery
The story of this winery began in the small village of Sveta Nedjelja on the island of Hvar. In beautiful vineyards on the unique southern slopes of the island, where Augustinian monks began growing grapes as early as the 16th century. The founder of the winery, Zlatan Plenkovic, a humble fisherman born in this village, filled the first bottle in 1986 when he founded the family farm, and today he is remembered as one of the first private winemakers and initiator of modern winemaking in this area. Already after three years of work, they received protection for top quality wine, and then they started with larger production and sale of wine. In 1993, they founded the company Zlatan otok.
In his 30 years, Zlatan Plenkovic achieved a lot, he was a true visionary and ready to take risks in the era of socialism in Croatia. He left an indelible mark on Croatian winemaking and always believed in his vision. After years of joint dedicated work, love and dedication to this business, the once small family business has become one of the largest and most awarded wineries in Croatia. Today, they own more than 120 hectares of vineyards on the island and on the mainland, and buy another 50 hectares from our carefully selected associates. The vineyards are located on the wine-growing positions of the southern slopes of the island of Hvar, at the foot of Biokovo near Makarska and on the hills of Jadrtovac near the town of Sibenik. From the black varieties, Plavac mali, Crljenak (Zinfandel), Babic, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre, Grenache are grown, and from the white varieties there are Posip, Bogdanusa, Zilavka, Dubrovnik Malvasia, Chardonnay and Muscat yellow. They produce about 800,000 bottles per year, which they successfully market on the domestic and foreign markets.
Ever since the title of the best Croatian winemaker has been awarded, Zlatan Plenkovic has been among the best. In 2009, he was elected as a Croatian wine knight and, according to the statute, he entered the ranks of the greats of winemaking and could no longer compete for winemaker of the year. Since 1991, his Zlatan Plavac has been regularly declared the best red wine in Sabatina. In 2012, Zlatan's Posip became the first Croatian white wine to be declared the champion of the region by Decanter. In 2015, he was awarded the "Mate Bobanovic" award for years of self-sacrificing work in viticulture and winemaking, and not long after that, his most awarded wine, Zlatan Plavac Grand Cru, was included in France among the 10 best red wines in the world.
